SURROUND SOUND-NOT JUST FOR HOME THEATERS ANYMORE
Consumers are surrounded-by surround sound, that is! A technology which became firmly established as part of the home theater experience is now moving out into new areas, in particular those of digital radio and MP3-based audio. This technology enables 5.1 channel surround sound for a broad spectrum of applications including web-based music distribution, broadcasting systems, PC-related audiovisual or gaming applications, consumer electronics and automotive systems. According to Fraunhofer, MP3 Surround supports high-quality multichannel sound at bit rates comparable to those currently used to encode stereo MP3 material, resulting in files half the size of common compressed surround formats. In addition, the new format offers complete backward compatibility to any existing MP3 software and hardware devices.

MP3 Surround was developed by Fraunhofer IIS in collaboration with Agere Systems. "The Killer App For FM: 5.1 Surround Sound," Frank Foti, President, Omnia Audio, Cleveland, OH-Frank will discuss the surround sound technology his company is developing for use with the iBiquity HD Radio system in conjunction with Fraunhofer (developers of MP3 Surround discussed above), a system that will provide distinct multichannel listening experience to the FM radio audience;
"HDC Surround, 5.1 Surround over HD Radio," David Frerichs, VP and US General Manager, Coding Technologies, Mountain View, CA-in this presentation, David discusses "HDC Surround" which can be embedded in an IBOC transmission and provides full backwards compatibility with existing stereo broadcasts and radios. HDC Surround is based on spatial audio coding technologies developed by Coding Technologies and Philips, which have also successfully been submitted for standardization by MPEG;
"5.1 & 2.0 Interspersion: A Reality," Robert Reams, CTO, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist, Neural Audio Corp, Kirkland, WA-Robert will talk about Neural's spatial compression and rendering methodology which allows a broadcaster to capture original source 5.1 content and "downmix" it to a 2.0 channel format while allowing the consumer to render the content in any spatial format they choose; mono, stereo, 3 channel stereo, quad, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, up to 256 (!) channels;
"The Surround Sound Program for Radio," Shigeru Aoki, R&D Engineer, The Japan FM Network, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan-the Japan FM Network tackles the 5.1-surround radio program on both analog and digital broadcasting service with the intention of providing a rich listening experience all over Japan. Shigeru will present information on how his company is implementing 5.1 surround sound over analog FM as well as digital broadcast channels.
