Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season Review (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/960/smallvilles6.html)

"This HD DVD edition is also quite strong, boasting a nice upgrade in video and audio, especially compared to the show's original broadcast. The only weak link is a relatively anemic supplemental package, but if you're a fan of the show and haven't seen this latest season, don't let that stop you -- this one's a winner."

The HD-A30 is now available on store shelves.

Some initial impressions:

* Bootup time is 5-10 seconds faster than the HD-A20
* Does not feature REON chip, but has an ABT solution; unknown how it performs compared to REON at this point in time
* Case is slimmer
* More powerful processor believed to be SoC, should run cooler and be less picky than the HD-A20

O Bridge é melhor esperar a versão espanhola aí atrás.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11710328#post11710328

Just a small aside.

Heard a rumor that Hero's was being worked on as a example or experiment for download subtitle capability. Whether not that would ever be available for general consumer release is unknown, but Universal may be experimenting with that concept. Hope they would include Spanish.

A while ago, in my day job, I had seen some information on how Heroes was performing in some Spanish language television tracking when it was originally broadcast last year, and IIRC it did well in North American Hispanic Households.

I believe it was SAP broadcast in Spanish in the USA, but I am not sure.

So Spanish subtitles, or alternative language tracks might actually be a realistic possibility in the future.

New Line has recently announced the third installment of the Rush Hour film franchise to be available on HD DVD soon at $39.98 SRP each, though it will not be released day-and-date with the 2-disc DVD.

I personally suspect that Rush Hour 3 HD DVD may hit stores earlier than Hairspray HD DVD, but this is purely a speculation of mine.

Back to the official details, New Line has promised the following special features on the HD DVD:

Feature-length audio commentary from director Brett Ratner
Deleted scenes with audio commentary from director Brett Ratner
“Le Rush Hour Trois Production Diary" featurette
Gag reel
Theatrical trailer
Enhanced visual commentary
Interactive menus
Internet Connectivity Experience (HD DVD-exclusive)
Further details will be posted here as soon as they are revealed.

Dutch HD DVD Releases

Air Force Two / In Her Line of Fire will be available to own on HD DVD, starting October 23. It will have a RRP of 20.99 euros.

Amazing Planet (€ 29,99 RRP), Flyboys (€ 29,99 RRP), Lord of War (€ 20,99 RRP), Reservoir Dogs (€ 20,99 RRP), Running Scared (€ 20,99 RRP) and SAW III (€ 29,99 RRP) will be available to own in high-definition on HD DVD from Nov 13.

Due November 6th, the two new "Best of HD DVD" sets will be a one-to-one match with Warner's 'Best of Blu-ray, Family' and 'Best of Blu-ray, Action' volumes announced earlier this month, with each volume containing four previously-released high-def hits apiece.

'The Best of HD DVD, Action' set will include: 'Alexander Revisited,' 'Troy: Director's Cut,' 'Blood Diamond' and 'Wyatt Earp.'

"The Best of HD DVD, Family' set will include 'Happy Feet,' 'Scooby-Doo,' 'Tim Burton's Corpse Bride' and 'The Ant Bully.'

Specs and bonus features for the movies included in these bundles will be identical to their standalone HD DVD counterparts, and box art for each individual title will also remain the same.

http://reviews.avsforum.com/data/3/large/Shrek31.jpg

In the third installment of the wildly popular SHREK series of computer-animated movies, everyone's favorite hygienically challenged green ogre (voiced by Mike Myers) faces both parental and royal responsibility when his wife, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), finds out that she is pregnant and that her father, King Harold (John Cleese), is on his death bed. The shock of these revelations leads Shrek on a journey with his loyal companions Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to seek out another heir to the throne--an awkward young boy named Artie Pendragon (Justin Timberlake). Waiting in the wings is the scheming Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who sees the perfect opportunity to make his own bid for power and rallies a villainous crew to attack the castle.

Taking over the reins from director Andrew Adamson, Raman Hui and Chris Miller fill the land of Far, Far Away with even more fairy-tale characters in SHREK THE THIRD. Although this takes away from Shrek's own screen time, it introduces the highly amusing Princess Squad--which includes Snow White (Amy Poehler) and Cinderella (Amy Sedaris)--and the bullying Lancelot (John Krasinski), among others. And, as always, this SHREK outing features many pop-culture references, even managing to nod to two horror films (THE EXORCIST and ROSEMARY’S BABY) in a single shot. The movie also allows for more hilarious interplay between Donkey and Puss in Boots, resulting in a comedic adventure tale that, while over-populated, is still undeniably entertaining.

Shrek the Third HD DVD Details:

Other than the 24Hz/23.976....Hz issue I would strongly recommend Toshiba considering a "forced 24p" mode in addition/instead of the current mode which is depending on correct EDID and HDMI handshaking. MANY displays and intermediate receivers "support 24p" but have incorrect/incomplete EDID programming which breaks the HDMI handshake.

In order to avoid these issues a "forced 24p" (=23.976....p ) mode is being offered by the majority of 24p supporting players including the PS3.

Thanks you TheLion. Earning your recognition is very flattering to me. I have worked very hard to persuade Toshiba to do many things and my most important accomplishment is the A20/XA2 firmware upgrade and development of the A30 and A35 passing of 24fps.

I have already and will continue to work with engineering to get a forced 24fps.

I am also working toward the development of several other very nice features and promotions I hope we'll see in very short time.

PS. O "What You Will Need (http://www.warnervideo.com/warner_bros_hi_definition/us/html/tech_specs.html)" ainda está lá; não tiraram não ....; assim como o IN MOVIE EXPERIENCE (http://www.warnervideo.com/warner_bros_hi_definition/us/html/inMovieExperience.html)(trailers exclusivos HD-DVD); inclusive o telefone e o email da Toshiba :legal:

PS2.

Other Details Of 'Transformers' (2007) HD DVD...

These are things that the press release issued earlier this month did not explicitly mention... and the back cover artwork did not indicate their presence too.

It has been confirmed that there will be 10 deleted scenes on Disc 2 of the DVD and HD DVD release. They are as follows:
- Sam Picks Up Miles
- Maggie & Glen Intro
- Police Station Drug Video
- Fig Wounded
- Fig Death
- SUV
- Big Rhonda
- Hoover Dam
- Proving Lab
- Simmons' President Speech

I wonder how many of these deleted scenes were found in the IMAX release. Anyway, director Michael Bay did mentioned on his blog that "There will never be an extended edition." and that the 2-Disc DVD "is the definitive edition of Transformers." The special features found on the 2-disc HD DVD mirrors that of the 2-disc DVD release plus more.

There will be a few easter eggs (around 5 minutes worth) on the Disc 2 of the HD DVD and DVD release.
- Michael Bay Cameo
- Girl in Dress
- The Bay-bot

Some Early Details of 'The Bourne Ultimatum' HD DVD

As with Bourne Identity and Bourne Supremacy HD DVDs, The Bourne Ultimatum HD DVD will contain Universal Studios' HD DVD-exclusive U-Control interactivity. At this moment in time, we are able to confirm that the U-Control interactivity package for this title also includes picture-in-picture instant access to video featurettes.

Other production featurettes and documentaries present on the disc includes Man on the Move - Jason Bourne, Rooftop Pursuit, New York Chase, Planning the Punches, Driving School, etc.

Warner Home Video has indicated that Twister will be available to own in high-definition on HD DVD starting January 8, 2008 at $28.99 SRP each. I do hope that Warner would include an audio option in either Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio formats. DTS 5.1 track on the DVD release was considered of demo quality, let us hope this HD DVD version blows away the DVD.

First Look Home Entertainment has recently announced that the film, King Of California, starring Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood, will be available to own in high-definition on HD DVD starting January 29, 2008 at $34.98 SRP a piece.

Ultimate Force (2006) will be released on HD DVD this November 13. It will be priced $19.98 SRP each.

New 'Shrek' Specs Promise Several HD DVD Firsts (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/DreamWorks/Exclusive_HD_Content/New_Shrek_Specs_Promise_Several_HD_DVD_Firsts/1016)

Final specs are in for the highly-anticipated HD DVD debut of 'Shrek the Third,' including word of a first-ever branching PIP commentary and the most comprehensive web-enabled content yet.

Although DreamWorks Animation already announced most of the specs for the 'Shrek the Third' HD DVD earlier this month, now they've issued an even more comprehensive rundown of the disc's contents.

Expanding upon the picture-in-picture video commentary feature found on other HD DVDs, the "Animator's Reel" will not only present an entire alternate version of the film in storyboard form, but it will further utilize the format's HDi technology to offer a "contextual seamless branch" to lost scenes and other content.'

Shrek the Third' is also set to push the boundaries in terms of what's been offered as web-enabled content on previous HD DVD releases. DreamWorks says a number of additional exclusive features will be made available for download the day the disc hits stores, including a full-length subtitle trivia track, a movie guide with files on characters and talent in the film, plus an interactive coloring book feature that allows you to digitally paint your favorite scenes.
As previously announced, the disc will also provide users the ability to customize their own menus based on famous 'Shrek' characters. Once customized, the user's menu will become the default menu for the disc, even after it has been ejected from the player.

Additional features identical to the standard DVD edition of the film are set to include audio commentary, multiple making-of featurettes, deleted scenes sand more.

M2 sells HD DVD system into Japan (http://www.oto-online.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=614&Itemid=44)

Wednesday, 26 September 2007

M2 has announced the sale of an SQ20 finishing line, to be used for both DVD and HD DVD, to Memory-Tech of Japan. The machine passed its final on-site testing in mid-June and has been running at full production capacity ever since.

Goran Lomback, president of M2 Asia Pacific, told One to One, "We are very proud to have an SQ20 installed at Memory-Tech, the pioneer of the HD-DVD format, and we are very satisfied with the performance of the machine for the production of both DVD and HD-DVD. The experience gained by working with Memory-Tech will help us in our continuing process of improving the performance of the SQ20 to make it the most versatile replication line for all DVD and HD-DVD production requirements."

Memory-Tech, one of the founders of the HD-DVD format, is a major Japanese optical disc replicator with production being carried out at multiple facilities. Its total production capacity is 60 million discs per month, of which about 11 million are HD-DVD. The SQ20 was chosen by Memory-Tech for its cost-effective production performance and the capability to switch effortlessly between the DVD and HD-DVD formats.

According to Memory-Tech, quality of the finished discs was also a major consideration when deciding on which equipment to purchase. The high demands placed on quality as a certified Microsoft replicator and main DVD supplier for the Xbox, were well met by the SQ20.

Vale a pena!

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=834960&page=2

Para tentar : :legal:

I just finished Bourne Identity with no problems. I will keep my fingers crossed. This is what I did when I got it. I heard of this problem with someone and they said they reset the player by holding the power button until it restarted and they never had the problems again.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11772742#post11772742

After doing more comparisons I am convinved the A35 is right on par with the XA2 in terms of SD upconversion. If you already own a XA2 there is really no reason to switch to the A35 unless you want to do bitstream ASAP. If you are on the fence then there is no reason not to go with the A35. I have both units and the A35 is getting the nod in terms of starting in my theater. Now if the XA2 were to get the bitstream audio firmware update and get 1080p/23.98 (FORCE MODE) then it may end up being a different story. Of course if the A35 were to get a FORCE 1080p/23.98 mode first then again... Either way I think everyone can be happy with either or... There are no losers here...

You need to see the A35 handle the HQV stadium test. It handles it like a champ!
Whatever chip it is using it gets the job done. If you are on the fence then rest assured and grab the A35. Out of the box 1080p/23.98 works fine, bitstream is ready to go, faster load times, and a sharper image...

Toshiba lança 4 gravadores combo HD-DVD/DVD/VHS (http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/27/toshiba-updates-vardia-line-of-hdd-dvd-recorders/)

http://www.engadgethd.com/media/2007/09/9-26-07-vardia.jpg

It's been nearly a year to the day since Toshiba unleashed a slew of VARDIA updates -- the RD-A600 notwithstanding -- but recently the firm got official with four new combo recorders. Starting things off is the October-bound RD-W301 (¥90,000; $785), which is the only newcomer to record to HDD, DVD and VHS, and it also includes a 300GB drive, HDMI / S-Video / composite outputs and a hybrid TV tuner. The RD-E301 (¥80,000; $698), which is also slated to ship next month, shuns the VHS crowd but maintains the other features already mentioned. As for the RD-S301 (¥90,000; $785), it keeps the 300GB hard drive but doubles the amount of built-in hybrid tuners and tosses in an Ethernet jack for good measure. The flagship RD-S601 ups the ante even more with a DV input, i.LINK connectivity and a 600GB HDD, and should be available for ¥120,000 ($1,047) when it lands alongside the S301 in November.

Opera Hits HD DVD With 'Mozart: Die Zauberflote' (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Opus_Arte/Music_on_High-Def/Disc_Announcements/Opera_Hits_HD_DVD_With_Mozart:_Die_Zauberflote/1023)

If you've been thirsting for opera on next-gen disc, mark October 30 on your calendar.

That's the day UK distributor Opus Arte will release 'Mozart: Die Zauberflote' (aka 'Mozart: The Magic Flute') on HD DVD here in the US.

Shot with high-definition cameras and originally broadcast on the BBC, this 2003 production of 'Die Zauberflote' features Mozart interpreter Sir Colin Davis conducting the chorus and orchestra of the Royal Opera House and a glittering cast live at London's Covent Garden.

The release marks the second HD DVD to hit the states from Opus Arte, one of the UK's leading indie distributors of art, classical and opera titles on standard-def DVD. (Opus previously released 'Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake' this past May.)

Tech specs are TBA, but the supplement package is set to include an illustrated synopsis of the opera, a behind-the-scenes featurette, an interview with Sir Colin Davis and a cast photo gallery.

Panasonic unveils Blu-ray and HD DVD recorders made with 45-nm LSI technology (http://www.edn.com/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA6486341)
By Colleen Taylor, Contributing Editor -- Electronic News, 10/2/2007

The company's choice to make both Blu-ray and HD products puts it in the same format-neutral camp as Intel Corp. in terms of the buzzed-about "format wars" between Blu-ray and HD DVD. Last month, Intel announced fifth-generation 45-nm Centrino mobile platform codenamed Montevina that will contain native support for both HD DVD and Blu-ray media when it launches next year.

Toshiba HD-A35 Datasheet (http://www.tacp.com/tacpassets-images/models/hd-a35/docs/hd-a35_spec.pdf)
Toshiba HD-A30 Datasheet (http://www.tacp.com/tacpassets-images/models/hd-a30/docs/hd-a30_spec.pdf)
Toshiba HD-A3 Datasheet (http://www.tacp.com/tacpassets-images/models/hd-a3/docs/hd-a3_spec.pdf)

The A1/A2/A3 are all limited to 1080i output.

Each new generation features progressively newer hardware for improved responsiveness, startup times, and disk load times.

For example, the A3 boots up in 25-30 seconds compared to 38-40 seconds for the A2 and >60 seconds for the A1.

The A1 had 5.1 analog output (for older receivers) in addition to optical and HDMI; the A2 and A3 only have optical and HDMI.

The A20/XA2/A30/A35 all provide 1080p60 and direct-from-disk 1080p24 output.

The A20 and XA2 both use the same NEC EMMA3 decoder (http://www.linuxelectrons.com/news/embedded/nec-electronics-introduces-next-gen-emma-system-lsi-chips), but the A20 uses the Anchor Bay ABT1018 (http://www.anchorbaytech.com/products/semiconductors/abt1018.php) for 1080p60 output and DVD upconversion while the HD-XA2 uses the [superior] Silicon Option ReonVX (http://www.siliconoptix.com/contentEngine/dspDocumentDownload.cfm?PCVID=2d4893ca-f663-2e08-c62e-314dbfaf0518) for higher quality 1080p60 output and DVD upconversion.

The A30 and A35 are also expected to use the same NEC EMMA3 decoder, but that is unconfirmed.

The A30 and A35 are both expected to use an Anchor Bay processor for 1080p60 output and DVD upconversion, but it is currently unknown whether they use the ABT1018 (http://www.anchorbaytech.com/products/semiconductors/abt1018.php) (same as A20) or the new and improved ABT2010 (http://www.anchorbaytech.com/products/semiconductors/abt2010.php).

Of these players, only the HD-XA2 and HD-A35 have 5.1 analog output for use with older receivers.

Of all these players, only the XA2 and A35 have HDMI 1.3. HDMI 1.3 will allow both of these players to bypass the player's internal audio decoding and output the original audio bitstream directly off the disk to a HDMI 1.3 TrueHD/DTS-HD receiver for decoding.

This will be accomplished with an override setting on the player. This capability will be available with the A35 at release and will be added to the XA2 with a software update in October/November.

Error code: 408bc504

Thanks, Shag!

The hard reset you described worked. For anyone else's benefit: With the DVD player turned off, press, hold, and continue to hold down the power button on the player (not on the remote). The player will turn on, begin its boot up, then turn off. Power up again and it should work.

The next time I turned it on, both DVDs worked perfectly with my original setup preferences.

HD DVD to Launch Online Shopping Feature (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hQrEE41eK89R-pBrtODoRq5F8hwgD8S1JTKO0)

http://www.universalhidef.com/

http://www.universalhidef.com/features.aspx

NEW YORK (AP) — Just watched "Evan Almighty"? Did its environmental message make you want to buy ecologically sound toilet paper?

Well, now you can get instant gratification — if you watched the movie on an HD DVD player and are willing to give the remote a workout.

The HD DVD of "Evan Almighty" will be the first disc to include an online shopping feature, Universal Studios announced Wednesday.

It's a new front in the struggle between HD DVD and Blu-ray to become the high-definition successor to the DVD. The disc formats offer nearly indistinguishable image quality, so the two camps are battling for holiday shoppers by other means, like cutting prices and piling on features.

The HD DVD camp, which apart from General Electric Co.'s Universal includes Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures, Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp., has been touting the online capabilities of Toshiba's players, which all have jacks for broadband Internet connections. By contrast, not all Blu-ray players have Internet connections.

But the HD DVD camp has been slow to take advantage of the Internet. Discs with Internet features, like downloadable trailers and subtitles, only started appearing this summer.

"Evan Almighty," to be released Oct. 9, will contain a simple Web browser that connects to Universal's online store, which will be offering products vaguely related to the movie. Previews of the site featured toilet paper made of recycled materials — 12 rolls for $14 — and a rain barrel for $135 (the movie is a retelling of the story of Noah's Ark). The products offered may change by the time the disc goes on sale.

It's uncertain whether consumers will appreciate the shopping opportunity, especially since the transaction has to be completed using the remote. Judging by a demonstration of the technology, entering credit-card information and a home address using the remote and an onscreen keyboard is a slow process. It can be shortened by creating an account in advance on a home computer, then logging into it through the player.

The online shopping feature may not be immediately appealing to consumers, but they are not the only battleground in the HD DVD versus Blu-ray fight. It's also important for each format to woo the studios. The HD DVD camp scored a major victory in August, when it lured Paramount into its fold. The studio had previously issued movies in both formats. With a few exceptions, HD DVD is now its only high-definition format.

The "HD REC" function allows recording of HD DVD video content on red-laser DVD-R/RW/RAM media. This means that two hours of MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video (4Mbps) will be recorded on a DVD disc. In addition, the new recorder will be able to burn encode video in the sufficient MPEG4 AVC/H.264 format and store it in HD DVD-R media or in the available HDD.

The new model will also expected to support output of 1080/24p video in DeerColor HDMI interface, as well as Toshiba's REGZA link for easy connection with Toshiba's compatible products.http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=21528

DVD Forum Approves Recording of HD DVD Content on Red-laser Recordable Discs

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=21390

The DVD Forum on Sep 12 approved the introduction of another extension of the HD DVD format, which allows HD DVD Format content to be stored on red-laser recordable Discs.
The decision was announced yesterday on the 39th meeting of the DVD Forum's Steering Committee.

The organization introduced the "HD REC" logo, to be included in the products that conform to the specifications related to the recording of HD DVD video content on red-laser DVD-R/RW/RAM media.

In addition, the DVD Forum approved the optional specifications for HD DVD-ROM Physical Specifications Version 1.2: Triple Layer Twin format, Revision 1.0. The specifications are related to the recently announced extension of the HD DVD format, which refers to single- sided disc with one DVD layer and two HD DVD layers. The available capacities are 4.7GB for DVD and 30Gb for HD DVD. Additional information for the new HD DVD triple-layer discs is available here.

The Steering Committee also approved the use of standard content of HD DVD-Video specifications as well as the use of the file system of HD DVD-ROM in the Chinese version of the HD DVD, the CH-DVD (China High Definition DVD). The move underlines the strong relation of the new Hi-def Chinese format with the HD DVD. After all, the differences between these two formats are very small.

Other decisions of the DVD Forum include:

Approval of the DVD Specifications for High Density Read-Only Disc [HD DVD-ROM (51G)] Part 1 Physical Specifications, Version 1.9

Approval of
-DVD Download Blank Disc Test Specification, Version 1.0
-DVD Download disc Writer Test Specification, Version 1.0

Approval of HD DVD & DVD Non-Mandatory Verification Tools Requirements & Guidelines, Version 1.0

Last but not least, the Steering Committee decided to extend the MOU between the DVD Forum and the Chinese Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC) until December 31, 2007, and to authorize CSC to engage in preliminary discussions with OMNERC to facilitate drafting definitive agreements.

Region code hack - HD-A1 (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/toshiba-hd-a1/6994)

Region code posted by Lorin Thwaits, April 29 2006:
The HD-DVD side of the player is already region free! What joy. But you clicked on the link wanting to see a hack. So here it goes.

Inside the unit the firmware is on a USB daughter card attached near the back of the unit. You can read it by plugging its standard 9-pin connector into a motherboard. When analyzing the contents, Red Hat Linux is found on the card. Here's more info:

http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/archive/2006/04/21/75795.aspx

To change the region code of the DVD (standard definition) part of the player. HD-DVD is already region free.

Not really a 'region free' hack, but a hack to change the region code for those using this nice player outside the USA to play standard definition DVD's.

No special f/w or hardware is needed.

1) Open the player
2) Make a picture or note how everything was connected
3) Get the main board out
4) Remove the base plate of the mainboard
5) Remove the HD-DVD drive. It looks like a PC DVD-ROM drive
6) Remove the IDE converter
7) Place the HD-DVD drive in your PC (Use Windows XP or Vista), drive must be master.
8) Start your PC
9) Go to the device manager en then to the DVD drive properties
10) Go to the region tab
11) Change the region to the area you're in
12) Shutdown your PC
13) Remove the drive from the PC
14) Put your HD-DVD player back together
15) Test, everything should work -> finished

Region code hack posted by daniel, January 18 2007:
the above hack you wrote does not work if you leave it in a computer the drive works , but when i put it back in the hdxa1 it come up saying cannot play pal 4 disc , then had to change it back to region 1

Region code hack posted by Robert Goldie, July 03 2007:
Ignore all the nonsence about having to open this up to make it multiregion. This model is already multiregion, but you need to use the units menu for this. This model is the HD-E1 in Europe, and is set to region 2 for standard DVD's when taken out the box. (but will play all HD-DVD's worldwide). However, you don't need to use a "Hack" to make it play other regions or NTSC DVD's. All you do is go to the settings area using your remote control. The default setting is PAL for this model in Europe, all you do is change this to "AUTO" and hey presto, you can play all regions no problem. it's that simple.

Toshiba and Microsoft Announce Plans to Form Advanced Interactivity Consortium (http://usstock.jrj.com.cn/news/2007-10-05/000002750083.html)

The Advanced Interactivity Consortium will also include major Hollywood studios DreamWorks Animation SKG, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Bros., which have given their commitment to these advanced scenarios and experience bringing new features to consumers. Each studio currently distributes, or will distribute, HD DVD titles with HDi-enabled features, from advanced in-movie navigation, bookmarking and picture-in-picture, to Web- enabled communities, content downloads and e-commerce stores.

"We are pleased to support the formation of the Advanced Interactivity Consortium and look forward to further developing interactive scenarios on HD DVD that will extend the consumer experience to new platforms," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms. "By following a standards-based approach, this collaboration will uniformly benefit consumers as well as the industry."

The AIC founding member companies plan to formalize the organization shortly and to extend additional partner invitations.

Pan’s Labyrinth HD DVD (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=66078)(US)

New Line Home Entertainment have announced the US Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD release of Pan’s Labyrinth on 26th December 2007 priced at $35.99 SRP each. From director Guillermo Del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth is a fanciful and chilling story set against the backdrop of a fascist regime in 1944 rural Spain. The film centres on Ofelia, a lonely and dreamy child living with her mother and adoptive father; a military officer tasked with ridding the area of rebels. In her loneliness, Ofelia creates a world filled with fantastical creatures and secret destinies. With post-war repression at its height, Ofelia must come to terms with her world through a fable of her own creation.

The film is presented in 1080P 1.85:1 Widescreen with Spanish DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 Surround and optional English, English SDH and Spanish subtitles.

Exclusive HD extras are:
Enhanced Visual Commentary: Exclusive high definition feature takes you behind the scenes while viewing the film (BD & HD DVD)
Web Enhanced Features: Additional interactive features available through your HD player’s internet connection (HD DVD only)

Extras carried over from the 2-Disc DVD release and presented in standard definition:
Video prologue by writer / director Guillermo del Toro
Feature audio commentary from director Guillermo del Toro
Marketing Campaign
”The Power of Myth” featurette: A discourse on the use of fairy tale mythology in Pan’s Labyrinth
”Pan and The Fairies (El Fauno y Las Hadas)” featurette: Del Toro unravels the intricate colour and texture coding present in all his work
The Charlie Rose Show featuring filmmakers Del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
DVD Comics: Animated plates present prequel stories for The Giant Toad, The Fairies, Pan and The Pale Man
Director’s Notebook: Interactive menu pages access video pods that feature exclusive interviews with Del Toro – Lost Character: El Hombre de Madera; Torture of The Maquis; The Phases of the Moon; Iconography: Echo…Echo…; The Underground Kingdom: Miniature Construction; The Mill: Set Design
Multi-Angle Storyboard / Thumbnail Compares
VFX Plate Compare: Guillermo del Toro and The Green Fairy
Galleries: Production Design, DDT Creature Design & Production Scrapbook

The Blu-ray Disc release is coded for Region A, but so is the HD DVD release if you believe the back cover artwork. We’re certain it’s just a mistake as there is no region coding on HD DVD, but it’s bound to get chins wagging over the next few days!

15) Test, everything should work -> finished

the above hack you wrote does not work if you leave it in a computer the drive works , but when i put it back in the hdxa1 it come up saying cannot play pal 4 disc , then had to change it back to region 1

Triple-layer 51GB HD DVD May Be Ready

Author: CHRIS TRIBBEY
ctribbey@questex.com
Posted: October 3, 2007

http://www.homemediaretailing.com/news/html/breaking_article.cfm?sec_id=2&&article_ID=11307

Several news outlets are reporting the DVD Forum has approved, or is close to approving, Toshiba’s 51GB, triple-layer, single-sided HD DVD, which was first announced at the CES show this year.

Storing 17GB on each of the three layers, the new HD DVD, if used in production, would surpass Blu-ray Disc’s 50GB.

The DVD Forum did not wish to comment. However, Andy Parsons, chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association’s U.S. Promotions Group, was quick to slam the dig at the Blu-ray 50GB with the extra 1GB, and questioned how the 51GB HD DVD would affect production costs for HD DVD backers, and whether the new discs would play on existing HD DVD players.

“It will be very interesting to see how they address production issues,” he said. “And wait a minute, wasn’t the 30GB big enough for them? They were so adamant about it.”

DVD Forum approves 51GB HD DVD (http://videobusiness.com/article/CA6487214.html)
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 10/4/2007

OCT. 4 | A working group within the DVD Forum has approved the specification for a triple-layer 51GB HD DVD, confirmed a spokesperson for the North American HD DVD Promotion Group, opening the door for the format to be competitive with Blu-ray Disc’s highest-capacity 50GB disc.

Replicators can now start producing 51GB HD DVD discs, which include three layers holding 17GB capacity each. Production should drive manufacturers to begin testing how existing HD DVD players and drives can playback such the new discs.

No studio has announced plans to release a 51GB HD DVD, which was first announced as a developing technology during January’s CES. However, HD DVD backers will likely use the ability to create such high-capacity discs as ammunition in the format war.

Many Blu-ray supporters have pointed to their own 50GB BD releases as a competitive advantage to HD DVD, which to date has generated 15GB and 30GB discs. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Oct. 30 BD release of Spider-Man 3 is among upcoming Blu-ray titles containing 50GB discs.

HD DVD Studios to Join Microsoft, Toshiba in Promoting HDi (http://www.betanews.com/article/HD_DVD_Studios_to_Join_Microsoft_Toshiba_in_Promot ing_HDi/1191528719)
By Scott M. Fulton, III, BetaNews
October 4, 2007, 4:11 PM

Apparently as part of a separate effort from the HD DVD Promotional Group, Toshiba and Microsoft announced tomorrow morning Asia/Pacific time (this afternoon US time) they will form a new coalition dedicated to promoting the HDi interactive layer used in HD DVD.

The charter members of the Advanced Interactivity Consortium will consist of Paramount (along with its DreamWorks Animation unit), Warner Bros., and Universal Studios. These well-known studios have apparently made a commitment to release HD DVD titles in the near future -- a timeframe has not been publicly specified -- that will feature advanced overlaid menuing, bookmarking, Internet connectivity including download capability, and online shopping.

Missing from the list is Disney, which played a major role in the creation of what is now called HDi, but which today is firmly in the Blu-ray camp. Earlier, a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews that the company continues to acknowledge Disney's contribution to the HD DVD interactive layer, but that HDi should be interpreted as Microsoft's specific implementation of the standard - implying that other implementations could co-exist, even for other disc formats.

In a statement this afternoon, Microsoft entertainment and devices president Robbie Bach carried on that language: "We look forward to contributing to this effort with HDi, our implementation of HD DVD's interactive layer, and to collaborate with AIC members on how to extend interactive compatibilities to the consumer electronics market. The goal is to ensure a high-quality experience not only through optical discs but also through new digital download services."

New AIC member Universal announced its pending release yesterday of the first title that could qualify under the AIC specifications, and will probably bear the HDi logo as a result: the Steve Carell comedy Evan Almighty. For now, the plan is for the HDi logo to appear on discs that comply with Microsoft's standard, as well as on Toshiba-brand HD DVD consoles.

Perhaps not by coincidence, Universal Studios Home Entertainment President Craig Kornblau received star treatment from today's AIC charter announcement, as the sole representative of the studios to make a statement: "By following a standards-based approach, this collaboration will uniformly benefit consumers as well as the industry."

Toshiba confirms audio bit stream upgrade (http://www.dvdtown.com/news/toshiba-confirms-audio-bit-stream-upgrade/4792)

FIRST ONLINE Oct 5, 2007

Rumors that Toshiba would not upgrade its 2nd generation top model the XA2 to support bit stream audio over HDMI forcing consumers to buy their 3rd generation player that support this.

Bit stream audio over HDMI allows for external decoding of HD audio codecs.

This is not true. Toshiba confirmed to DVDTOWN.com that they indeed are working on a firmware upgrade that will allow bit stream audio over HDMI on the XA2. The date of release is still not decided upon but they promised to let us know.

They also confirmed that the new models A30 and A35 are shipping right now to retailers and should be in stock or become it very soon.

The A3 will follow in early November.

Production should drive manufacturers to begin testing how existing HD DVD players and drives can playback such the new discs.

Fujitsu Launches Full HD H.264 Transcoder which extends recording time by more than 250% - Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd (http://www.htforum.com/vb/showthread.php?p=822642#post822642)
Product Announcements, 10/9/2007)
- Extends recording time by more than 2.5 times

http://expertlancer.com/fujitsu-mb86h52-full-hd-h-264-transcoder-lsi/

Bangalore, September 10, 2007 - Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd (FMAL) today announced the release of a new transcoder chip that can compress full HD (1920 x 1080) MPEG-2 video data to H.264 data. The new chip, MB86H52, is capable of compressing MPEG-2 video to less than half the data size while maintaining the same video quality.

With such high compression, the new chip is ideal for use in recording equipment such as hard drives, etc., where recording time can be increased by more than 250%. It also allows transmission of full HD video over narrow bandwidths. With the predicted increase in home network appliances, there are also many opportunities to embed this transcoder into equipment where the video data size needs to be reduced.

MB86H52’s superior properties are the result of a proprietary algorithm developed by Fujitsu Laboratories that automatically applies less compression to areas in the image where compression artefacts are most noticeable to human vision, such as human faces or slow-moving objects, and greater compression to other areas. Thus, high image quality for the critical zones is maximised.

This technology allows the same video quality to be maintained when transcoding from MPEG-2 to H.264. For digital terrestrial and digital satellite broadcasts, data is compressed into MPEG-2 format providing high-resolution video. However, if this video is then recorded to hard drive, the file size is very large and the recording time limited. As such, Fujitsu developed this MB86H52 transcoder that converts MPEG-2 video to H.264, which has higher compression.

MB86H52 provides a full HD H.264 CODEC (COde/DECode) for video encoding and decoding, so that uncompressed video data can be compressed to the H.264 format, while the device can also decompress video data from compressed or transcoded H.264. The CODEC is the same as that used in the previously announced MB86H51 device.

Microsoft & Toshiba to push HDi features beyond HD DVD (http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/10/06/microsoft-and-toshiba-partner-to-push-hdi-features-beyond-hd-dvd/)

Toshiba and Microsoft are taking their HD DVD partnership outside players and discs, by announcing the Advanced Interactivity Consortium. The idea behind the "open forum" is to take the interactive features found in HD DVD movies to other platforms, and potentially see HDi-style features on digital download services that connect directly to your PC, PMP, console or HDTV. The movie studios that currently support HD DVD (Dreamworks, Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros.) are also on board with additional partner invitations to be extended shortly. Whatever the result of this team is -- from simple website tie-ins or maybe HDi features on VOD/Xbox Live Video Marketplace/Zune, it's apparent HD DVD is just one part of these companies plans for digital media

Report: Best Buy Sells Most Blu-ray, HD DVD Titles (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Best_Buy/Industry_Trends/High-Def_Retailing/Report:_Best_Buy_Sells_Most_Blu-ray,_HD_DVD_Titles/1045)

According to a new research report, Best Buy is America's high-def disc leader, outselling both Wal-Mart and Amazon.com by what's being described as "a wide margin."

The report from NPD Group ranks Best Buy well-ahead of all other retailers in HD DVD and Blu-ray disc sales; Amazon.com is number two, while Wal-Mart (the nation's top standard-def DVD seller) is ranked number three.

Rounding out the top five is Circuit City (at #4), followed by Target.

In an article published by Video Business, a Best Buy spokesperson attributed the big box retailer's lead to its unique demographics as a specialty electronics chain.

"We generally have an audience that loves movies, where they are not casual fans, and these people are likely to have a great home theater experience," said Brian Lucas. "As one of the market leaders in HDTV sales, our customers tend to understand high-def more than the average consumer."

Nature's Journey HD DVD and Blu-ray: No Difference At Normal Viewing Distance (http://www.tvpredictions.com/2007/09/high-def-dvd-review-natures-journey.html)

Why review such a disc?

Well, these discs present an opportunity to evaluate the claimed advantages of the Blu-Ray format over HD-DVD. In addition to greater storage capacity, the BD spec includes a higher bit rate encode capability. Here, the BD disc is presented in VC-1 encoded at 37 Mbps the highest allowed in the BD spec whereas the HD-DVD disc, while also encoded with VC-1, is encoded with the lower highest bit rate permitted in the HD-DVD spec of 26 Mbps. The audio specs on both discs are also different with the BD disc having a DTS-MA lossless audio track (@ 5.3 Mbps average and 6.8 Mbps max) with the HD-DVD disc receiving “only” a DTS-HD track at 3 Mbps. Both discs also have Dolby Digital 5.0 encodes 48/24 @ 448 kbps and Dolby Surround 2.0 at 48/16 @192kbps. The question, do the increased BD specs provide for better audio and sound quality? The answers, sort of, are below.

Now on to the big question, namely whether the increased bit rate on the BD disc resulted in a noticeable difference in picture quality over the HD-DVD disc. At normal viewing distances, I would have to say no. I watched both discs several times and compared segments of the discs back to back. At 8 to 10 feet from the screen, they looked identical to me. At closer distances, namely 2 to 4 feet from the screen, on just a few scenes did I think that I may have noticed a slightly more detailed picture on the Blu-Ray version. I say I think because the differences I saw were very, very minor. What I thought I was able to discern were slightly sharper edges to some objects in some but not all scenes. However, I very much doubt that I would be able to identify which disc was which in a double blind test the differences were that minor. To spot any differences took a lot of viewing at very close distances. One could very well argue that working that hard to spot differences means that there were no differences at all. Frankly, at normal viewing distances, there were none.

the HD-DVD Promotions Group quickly countered with a little damage control, making sure everyone knew that the DVD Forum was close to approving the spec for a triple-layer 51GB HD-DVD disc (click here). However, industry sources are telling us that NONE of the existing Toshiba HD-DVD players and drives are currently capable of reading them. Indeed, the Video Business story indicates that once the spec is finalized, "compatibility with current HD DVD player and recorders can be investigated." According to reports from Bits readers who were on at CEATAC this weekend, Toshiba reps told attendees that the triple-layer disc configuration would require a hardware change (the lens on existing drives reportedly isn't capable of moving to focus on the third layer), meaning that the existing drives are not firmware updatable. This of course is unofficial. It remains to be seen what testing of the discs will reveal.

Toshiba says HD DVD set-top players are back in front
HD-DVD Camp estimates 5 million computer drives will be sold through 2008
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 10/9/2007 (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6488493.html?industryid=47213)

OCT. 9 | UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.—HD DVD set-tops have reclaimed their dominance over Blu-ray standalone players, according to weekly NPD Group unit sales figures cited by Toshiba.

HD DVD players began outselling Blu-ray models starting in mid-September and regained a year-to-date lead of a little over 50% through the rest of the month, said Jodi Sally, Toshiba VP of marketing of digital A/V products.

Sally also talked up HD DVD strength within PC drives. Toshiba estimates that 5 million HD DVD drives for desktops and notebooks will be sold during fiscal 2008. She believes that should make the format competitive with the Playstation 3, which was nearing 2 million units sold in the U.S. through the summer. HD DVD laptops are closing in on a relatively attractive $1,000 price point, likely fueling the retail movement.

Toshiba believes more people are buying PC HD DVD drives with the pure intention to watch high-def movies than people who are buying the PS3. Sources have estimated that just 20% of PS3 owners have played movies on the machine.

DVD Forum: 51GB HD DVD Still Testing; Paramount to Up HD DVD Efforts in 2008

10/10/2007)
CHRIS TRIBBEY

The 51GB HD DVD is a reality, but whether it will work on existing HD DVD players is still up in the air, according to a Toshiba representative of the HD DVD Promotional Group. The announcement came Oct. 9 at the DVD Forum’s North America DVD Conference in Universal City, Calif.

Toshiba’s Mark Knox said the technology is still in the testing phase, but would likely receive final approval from the DVD Forum by the end of the year. The three-layer disc would narrowly trump the storage capacity of rival Blu-ray Disc’s 50GB.

“We’re still looking at the backwards compatibility,” Knox said, adding a firmware update for existing HD DVD players might be needed, should studios eventually use the technology.

Knox also added that more “twin format” HD DVDs could be in the works. Unlike the HD DVD combo discs, which have a high-def film on one side and a standard definition version on the other, the twin format can hold two 30 GB of HD DVD and 4.7 GB of standard definition on one side of a disc.

Only Bandai Visual’s Freedom 1 anime HD DVD, released quietly in June, has taken advantage of that technology.

Other news out of the DVD Forum event:

Paramount, which went HD DVD exclusive in August, has only four HD DVDs planned for the rest of the year. But the studio will make a bigger HD DVD splash in 2008, according to a Paramount representative. Roughly 30 titles from Paramount and DreamWorks are already planned for 2008.

Dan Silverberg, VP of high-def marketing for Warner Home Video, said it’s possible high-def set-top boxes could reach 1.2 million households by the end of the year.
“That’s a lot,” he admitted. “But it’s possible.”

That number was disputed by Paul Erickson, senior HD analyst for NPD DisplaySearch. He estimated fewer than 1 million high-def standalone players would be in homes by the end of the year, but that consumer adoption would pick up in 2008.

“We know the consumers are buying next-generation [optical disc], just not at the level we may have expected,” he said. “We feel that the format war is going to be somewhat extensive.”

Ken Graffeo, EVP of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group, said consumer comfort with DVD is getting in the way of high-def.

“Our real challenge isn’t really against Blu-ray,” he said. “It’s against consumer satisfaction with DVD.”

Silverberg also touted the fact that Warner Bros., as the last major studio releasing titles on both Blu-ray and HD DVD, owns the largest high-def software market share (36%) and claims the most high-def units sold for a single title (400,000 copies of 300).

Carl Pinto, VP of product development and product management for Toshiba, shared company estimates that show 5 million notebook PCs will be equipped with HD DVD technology in 2008. He emphasized the fact most of those notebooks will be easy to connect to a TV.

Coming Soon: Sub-$1000 HD DVD Notebook (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,138285-c,dvddrivesmedia/article.html)

Toshiba tells its HD DVD strategy, from technology advances to price drops.

LOS ANGELES -- Even though two formats are duking it out for dominance, Toshiba sees HD DVD adoption following a trajectory similar to other optical disc formats before it.

"We see history repeating itself," Carl Pinto, vice president of product development and product management at Toshiba, told an audience during a presentation at the DVD Forum conference here this week.

Just as DVD gained momentum first as a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, HD DVD will see its early momentum from HD DVD-ROM/DVD SuperMulti writer drives. Even though a slim writer was announced in January at CES and has shipped in Japan, Pinto says he doesn't expect HD DVD burners to gain steam until 2009 or 2010.

Price Drops
Since HD DVD was first installed on a Toshiba Qosmio earlier this year, prices have fallen precipitously on notebooks equipped with an HD DVD drive. That early notebook debuted at $3000; today's prices hover at around $1500.

By the end of the year, in time for Christmas, said Pinto, "you'll be able to buy notebook computers at retail stores for under $1000."

The price drops can be attributed to the normal technology march known as Moore's Law. In the past year, the progression of the underlying technology required for a DVD drive has been impressive. For example, a notebook that cost $3000 at the start of the year required about $400 in components (excluding the cost of the HD DVD drive--a detail Toshiba is not surprisingly mum about) to handle HD DVD decoding, including the CPU and a graphics processor on a dedicated graphics card. By this fall, the mix of components necessary shifted to a CPU with integrated graphics processor and a hardware decoder, all for under $200. When winter 2008 rolls around, Toshiba expects to be able cut that price about in half again.

"Our goal for the third quarter of 2008 is to bring that cost down to under $100," Pinto said. "We believe that using improvements in CPUs and graphics subsystems, we can reduce the cost of playing back HD DVD."

Toshiba plans to make HD DVD an option on most all of its notebook PCs over the course of the coming year. The company estimates more than 5 million HD DVD drives will ship on notebook PCs in the coming year as the technology becomes more accessible and the price becomes more affordable.

Buy an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, Get 5 HD DVDs for Free (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/14765/Buy-an-Xbox-360-HD-DVD-Player-Get-5-HD-DVDs-for-Free/)

Microsoft announced today a new promo to push the HD DVD format. Between October 1, 2007 and February 28, 2008, if you buy an Xbox 360 HD DVD player, you can pick five movies for free from the HD DVD catalogue.

Additionally, if you buy an Xbox 360 Premium at Wal-Mart, you'll also get the 300 HD DVD/DVD for free so if you don't have the HD DVD player, you can still watch the DVD version.

PS. Então adquirindo 1 x360 + 1 Add on = 10 filmes

David Richards - Thursday, 11 October 2007

EXCLUSIVE: Toshiba has thrown a hand grenade into the Blu ray, HD DVD battle by slashing the price of HD DVDD players to sub $500. The move comes as the market for high definition HD players enters a new content era with Sony claiming that they and Blu ray will be the only survivors when the war is over.

At a press briefing in Sydney and shortly before the Toshiba announcement the Managing Director of Sony Pictures Michele Garra claimed that the key price point that would drive sales of Blu ray and HD DVD players

DUPLO GRAVADOR HD (HD-DVD e DVD HD)

HD DVD moves forward with recorders, 51GB disc (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6490435.html)

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 10/11/2007

OCT. 11 | UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.—The DVD Forum is readying launches of HD DVD recorders that burn to standard-definition media and new higher-capacity 51GB disc configurations.

The new blue-laser recorders using traditional DVDs would be valuable for budget-conscious consumers.

Currently, HD DVD recordable discs are priced steeply, whereas a 50-disc pack of DVD-Rs sells for a modest $20 to $30.

Consumers would likely only be able to fit one hour’s worth of high-definition content onto DVD-Rs using these new HD DVD recorders. An HD DVD disc can play back three times that much. But consumers would experience the DVD-R video in high-definition.

“When you playback, you’ll get the full resolution in high-def,” said Mark Knox, Toshiba technology adviser, during the Forum’s conference on Tuesday. “But [the disc] might be able to only hold one hour. You can’t store as much, but you’ll have cheap content on cheap discs. This is a whole new category of product.”

Knox also reiterated that the Forum is nearing finalization of a triple-layer 51GB disc specification. If produced, these discs each holding 17GB capacity per layer, would boost the format’s competitiveness against Blu-ray Disc, which has already released numerous 50GB titles. To date, HD DVD titles are in 15GB and 30GB configurations.

Also in the HD DVD development pipeline is a ‘twin format.’ In this twist on the HD DVD-DVD combo, there are two layers of HD DVD and one layer of standard-definition sitting on one side of the disc. With combos, the HD DVD and standard-definition DVD sit on opposite sides of the same disc.

In other Forum news, members hope to launch an HD DVD format in China by the August 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. This format would be incompatible with the HD DVD format elsewhere but is meant to create a new business in China. Viewed as progress toward this goal, the DVD Forum helped form the Chinese High Definition DVD Industry Assn. in September.

HDTV DISPLAYSEARCH: Full-profile Blu-ray players coming; HD DVD has more on Web

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 10/11/2007 5:29:00 PM

OCT. 12 | UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.—LG Electronics will launch one of the first Blu-ray Disc players boasting picture-in-picture functionality this month.

LG’s second-generation dual-format model will handle HD DVD advanced interactivity, as well as comply with ‘full profile specifications’ for Blu-ray players, reported the company’s product development director Tim Alessi at the HDTV DisplaySearch Conference here on Thursday.

As mandated by the Blu-ray Disc Assn., all Blu-ray hardware streeting after Oct. 31 must be full profile, carrying certain enhancements not required of earlier players. This broadened spec includes picture-in-picture and greater memory capacity.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 is expected to offer a firmware upgrade to fit this spec, but no availability date has been set.

To date, only HD DVD players can playback picture-in-picture, which has played a big part in such HD DVD titles as Warner Home Video’s 300.

Additionally, Pioneer Electronics will unveil its first full-profile player during January’s Consumer Electronics Show, said Pioneer senior manager of product planning and marketing Chris Walker at the conference.

However, HD DVD backers still own the market on Web functionality for now. No manufacturer has announced the rollout of BD Live players, which would be capable of such Web connectivity.

In fact, HD DVD will offer its most advanced Web features yet with the launch this year of remote networked control. With this feature, users can be linked up for private presentations, in which a group leader can direct the sessions remotely from a variety of devices, including mobile phones and PCs.

Microsoft HD DVD evangelist Kevin Collins said studios envision a filmmaker treating fans who’ve bought his or her HD DVD to exclusive discussions and video presentations.

Collins declined to name the HD DVD title set to first include remote networked control, but he said it will street by the end of the year.

“This takes networking to a new level, and it has never been done on a title,” said Collins.
